With a nickname like “nature’s Valium”, Valerian Root is quite obviously one of Mother Nature’s most powerful tools to bring a more peaceful shut eye.
The root is rich in valerenic and isovaleric acid as well as number of antioxidants known to promote more restful sleep and reduce anxiety.
Here’s the crazy cool part: Valerian interacts with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical tasked with regulating nerve impulses in our brain and nervous system. We can point our fingers at low GABA levels for anxiety and sleeplessness. The valerenic acid in Valerian combats the breakdown of GABA in our brains, bringing us feelings of calmness - and this is the same way anti-anxiety medications like Valium and Xanax work.
And the goodness doesn’t stop there! The root’s antioxidants, hesperidin and linarin, are known for their sedative properties. These compounds inhibit excessive activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain that processes fear and strong emotional responses to stress.
With all of this to speak to, we’re not surprised that the name ‘valerian’ is derived from the Latin verb ‘valere’, meaning ‘to be strong’ or ‘to be healthy’.
Taste-wise, this is one of our less-than-lovely tasting ingredients. Unlike its scented flowers, Valerian root has a strong, earthy odour from its oils and other compounds with sedative effects.
