The first page of our bedtime ritual book is on the gloriousness of ROUTINE.
Our bodies are made for it - so tucking ourselves in at the same time every eve and throwing back the covers at the same time every morn does us some serious good.
Our bodies are biological clocks (the circadian rhythm) and we can program our clocks accordingly. A consistent bed / rise time enables our bodies to release our sleepy hormones (melatonin) at just the right time (how neat is that ?!).
On the flip side, inconsistent sleep / rise schedules throw the intricacies of our internal clocks all out of sorts resulting in our inability to fall asleep / poor sleep quality (the worst).
